A colleague (Ken Bardach) and I are working on a book called The Noble Leader. The project involves identifying and surveying leaders we think are noble leaders. We intend to use the results of that survey to provide inspiring examples of Noble Leadership for the book. We have over 40 candidates on our list and have surveyed many of them already. I recently discovered another leader to add to that list, and wanted to share some quotes from him.
Most of the leaders on our list are business CEOs. Bob Bruner, however, until recently was Dean of one of the world’s leading business schools. Here’s a brief bio. Bob is one of the few “blogging deans”.
While visiting the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, I saw a poster celebrating his retirement from the Dean’s position. The poster titled “Leadership Inspiration from Dean Robert F. Bruner” contained some of his most frequent exhortations:
- Standing still is not an OPTION
- Take ACTION
- Trust the PROCESS
So far, you might say, “Pretty standard stuff – just what you’d expect from a business school dean.” But there’s more:
- Go where you will do your BEST WORK
- Be Willing to take RISKS
- Say Yes to LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
That’s encouraging. Just what you would hope a Dean would say. But consider these additional exhortations:
- INSPIRE Others
- SERVE Others
- Create a Community of INTEGRITY
…all from the Dean of one the world’s top ranked business schools! So there’s hope for business. Could this be a leading indicator of positive change to come in business and in other business schools? Let’s hope.
